Preview: Battlefield Heroes (PC)
Gamers have very particular tastes. Some gamers are very fond of cartoon-style shooters like the classic TimeSplitters series or the stylized Team Fortress II. A lot of gamers are more inclined towards action packed multiplayer shooters like those of the Battlefield series. Other gamers just want free to play shooters like WarSow or America’s Army. And other gamers just want to have some fun.
If you fall under any of the previously stated categories, you should be really interested in Battlefield Heroes. However, if you can relate to all these categories, this will certainly be the game of the year for you because Battlefield Heroes is a perfect blend of all the aforementioned features.
Battlefield Heroes is the newest addition to the Battlefield franchise, representing its most radical change yet. Gameplay wise, Battlefield Heroes won’t be bringing a lot of innovation to the franchise. Instead, it will set itself apart from the other Battlefield games by being the first free to play, cartoon-style shooter.
Classic Battlefield mayhem.
Also, the server browsing feature, which is the cornerstone of online PC gaming, will be replaced by the infamous matchmaking method mostly used for online console gaming. This indicates that Battlefield Heroes will be more suited for leisure purposes, as you’ll be randomly paired with players that equal you in skill and rank. The cheerful soundtrack and bright character and level design provide further evidence that Battlefield Heroes is very fun oriented.
Battlefield Heroes does rely on the archetypal Battlefield premise: a lot of weapon and vehicle variety and large landscapes; but it does bring some fresh ideas regarding player customization. You’ll be able to build your character from the ground up by choosing any combination of visual items. A good amount of these visual items come bundled with the game but if you want to acquire more of these items, you can do so by paying a certain amount of money for each one. Further content is sure to be provided once the game reaches a decent fan base. It’s also worth mentioning that the game can be played in either First Person of Third Person views.
Appearance matters.
Battlefield Heroes is being developed by EA’s Digital Illusions CE (also known as DICE), the same developer for Battlefield: Bad Company. However, Heroes and Bad Company will probably play very differently, seeing as Heroes uses the Refractor 2 engine (used for all the other Battlefield games whereas Bad Company uses the exclusive Frostbite Engine.
EA has been giving limited BETA keys to attract gamers and assemble a large fan base even before the final build is released in early 2009. A smart move from EA, since all the interested players who didn’t obtain a BETA key yet, are becoming eager to finally experiencing the game.
