Last weekend, from 19 to 21 December, our Medley team attended the sold-out XL Party in Cascais, Portugal, with hopes of achieving Top 3 performances in three distinct tournaments.
The XL Party is a renowned Lan Party which attracts the very best Portuguese clans and players due to the variety of the tournaments and pretty enviable prizes scattered amongst all 18 tournaments.
Our team partook in the Team Fortress 2, Halo 3 and Crysis Wars tournaments and after some hard-fought battles they accomplished their main objective by placing 1st in Team Fortress 2, 2nd in Crysis Wars and 3rd in Halo 3 .
Last but not least our very own Pedro ‘Ramalho’ Ramalho drove his way onto 2nd place on the highly contested Need for Speed: Undercover tournament, while Eduardo ‘w00tnot’ Lopes didn't get to the event in time for his FIFA 09 semi-final on the Xbox 360 but still got a respectable 3rd place.

WCG Portugal 2008
After much speculation about whether Portugal could host a respectable edition of World Cyber Games in 2008 or not, I had the opportunity to take part on this event and find out if it really lived up to everyone’s expectations.
This event was hosted on Estoril’s Congress Center and the organizers expected 20.000 visitors. This would probably mean that, at some point, the Congress Center would be at capacity but during my three days at the event I could never shy away from the feeling that it was never more than half-full.
Half-empty or half-full?
That being said, the competition between clans and players was intense, within a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. From my experience at the event, I never saw a glimpse of bad conduct or lack of fair-play (bearing minor exceptions).
Nostalgia land.
The Congress Center turned out to be a rather comfortable setting; the players were pampered with bean bags, couches and lot of Xbox 360’s for everyone to try out different games. You could put your rodeo skills to the test on the mechanical bull or experience some nostalgic moments on the retro gaming section, which wasn’t as complete as the organizers had claimed.
No one dares riding the bull.
Different activities unfolded during the event; there was an award for best game character costume of the event (not a lot of people participated though), you could win an Xbox 360 by playing on a gondola and you could even make an appearance on national television if you played Guitar Hero III well enough, while being filmed of course.
Being a rock superstar, for three minutes.
On the tournament side of things, there were six games to partake in. Counter-Strike 1.6, WarCraft 3, Halo 3, Need for Speed: ProStreet, Fifa 08 and Guitar Hero III. Also taking place on Estoril’s Congress Center was the PowerColor Iberia Source Cup, which awarded the best Iberian Counter-Strike Source clan.
The organization of the event, however, was very underwhelming. It was clear that some individuals on the Staff were not well informed and clearly not suited for this kind of event. This event was supposed to be an attempt at bringing eSports to a wider audience and yet it lacked professionalism when dealing with the players. The complete disregard to schedule shown in the Halo 3 Tournament, which began nearly six hours late, forced me to quit the tournament.
Everyone waited for the Halo 3 Tournament to start. For a long time.
Moreover, the award ceremony was nothing short of unacceptable. Third placers got neither a prize nor a place on the podium. The Staff didn’t even know the names of some of the winners and the crowd consisted of no more than twenty people.
No one likes an empty crowd.
The winners in each category were:
João 'JNC90' Carvalho - Guitar Hero III;
Pedro 'LastNight' Caiado - Fifa 08;
Rogério 'VGSpeedPro' Barroso - Need for Speed: ProStreet;
Team Console eSports - Halo 3;
Defining Stars - Counter-Strike 1.6;
The award ceremony.
Overall, the event didn’t live to its promise. Highly advertised and sponsored, with so many endorsements, I expected the tournament to be a lot more rewarding. The sheer fact that the award ceremony was so ignored and that the winners were so mistreated made the whole tournament feel somewhat out of purpose. Ultimately, this event was thought to give eSports a boost in Portuguese ground but, ultimately, it turned out to be more of a publicity stunt to promote corporations like ZON, EA, Samsung and Microsoft. |
